Valparaiso Chimney Sweep for Old Brick Stacks and New Gas Fireplaces
Few places ask a sweep to switch between a tall nineteenth-century stack and a sealed gas fireplace in the same afternoon. Valparaiso does.

What chimney types are found in Valparaiso?
Valparaiso homes fall into three broad chimney groups by age, and the right service differs for each one. The city incorporated in 1836, the Porter County Courthouse dates from 1883, and the Census ACS 2019-2023 median year built for Valparaiso housing is 1979, so the spread is unusually wide. The table reflects what houses of each era typically contain.
| Era of house | Typical chimney | Main concern | Usual service |
|---|---|---|---|
| Victorian to 1920s | Tall brick stack, unlined or mortar-parged, coal-era firebox | No continuous liner; soft mortar | Camera inspection, relining |
| 1950s-1980s | Masonry fireplace with clay-tile liner | Creosote, open tile joints, crown cracks | Sweep and Level 1 inspection |
| 1990s onward | Factory-built fireplace or direct-vent gas unit | Chase cover rust, pilot and burner faults | Gas tune-up, chase and cap check |
Can a coal-era fireplace in Valparaiso burn wood?
Usually not safely as built: coal fireplaces have shallow fireboxes and narrow flues that were never proportioned for an open wood fire. Logs overhang the hearth and the small flue cannot carry the smoke volume. Add a flue that is bare brick or coated with flaking mortar parging, and the answer for most old fireplaces near the courthouse square or in the Washington Street Historic District is to stop and inspect first. A video inspection of the full flue shows what is there. From that point the options are relining the old flue in stainless steel for a suitably small appliance, or leaving the fireplace decorative.
Newer Valparaiso houses need a different skill set. A sealed gas fireplace has no creosote, but its pilot assembly, thermopile and glass gasket still wear, which is what a gas fireplace tune-up addresses. Mid-century fireplaces sit in between and are kept healthy with routine creosote sweeping.
What should Valparaiso homeowners know locally?
Valparaiso is the Porter County seat, and questions about work in a designated historic district belong with the City of Valparaiso. Students in the city itself attend Valparaiso High School, although parts of the wider Valparaiso mailing area fall in other districts such as Wheeler and Boone Grove. Downtown, Central Park Plaza, one of the American Planning Association’s Great Public Spaces of 2016, turns its Urschel Pavilion into an ice rink each winter. We work from those blocks out past Valparaiso University, Fairgrounds Park and Rogers-Lakewood Park.
Weather note for tall chimneys
Porter County sits in the path of lake-effect snow bands off Lake Michigan. On a tall, exposed Valparaiso stack that means saturated brick followed by hard freezes, so the crown and the top six courses of mortar deserve a look every year.

Valparaiso fireplace and chimney FAQs
Can I use the fireplace in a Victorian house near downtown Valparaiso?
Not until it has been inspected. A fireplace in a Victorian-era Valparaiso house was probably built for coal or as a gas-grate hearth, with a shallow firebox and a flue that may have no liner. Have the flue scanned by camera first. Many of these fireplaces can be made usable with a liner and a properly sized appliance.
What is parging inside an old Valparaiso chimney?
Parging is a coat of mortar troweled onto the inside of a brick flue in place of clay tiles. In an old Valparaiso chimney it was the builder’s way of smoothing the flue. After a century it cracks and falls away in sheets, exposing bare brick joints, so a parged flue is treated as unlined when judged against NFPA 211.
Does a direct-vent gas fireplace in a newer Valparaiso home need a chimney sweep?
It does not need sweeping, but it does need yearly service. A direct-vent gas fireplace in a newer Valparaiso home draws air and exhausts through a sealed two-pipe vent, so there is no creosote. The burner ports, pilot, glass seal and vent termination still need cleaning and checking to keep the flame clean and the unit sealed.
Will relining change how a historic Valparaiso chimney looks?
Hardly at all. A stainless steel liner runs inside the existing flue of a historic Valparaiso chimney, so the brickwork is untouched. The only visible parts are a top plate and a cap at the crown. If your home is in a designated historic district, ask the city whether exterior changes at the chimney top need approval.
Why does the pilot on my Valparaiso gas fireplace keep going out?
A pilot that will not stay lit on a Valparaiso gas fireplace usually points to the thermocouple, the small sensor that generates about 30 millivolts in the pilot flame to hold the gas valve open. A dirty pilot orifice, a weak flame that misses the sensor or a worn thermocouple each cause dropout, and all are checked during a tune-up.
What does a stainless steel liner do in an old Valparaiso chimney?
A stainless steel liner gives an old Valparaiso chimney a continuous, gas-tight flue inside the original brick. Liners listed to UL 1777 are tested for the heat of solid-fuel or gas appliances. The liner is sized to the appliance so exhaust stays warm and rises quickly, and insulation around it keeps heat away from old masonry.
Does Porter County lake-effect snow shorten the life of a Valparaiso chimney crown?
It can. Lake-effect snow leaves a Valparaiso chimney crown wet for days, and each overnight freeze works on any crack already there. A crown cast in concrete with a slope and an overhanging drip edge sheds that meltwater; a flat mortar skim holds it. Sealing small cracks early is far cheaper than a rebuild.
My Valparaiso home has two flues in one chimney. Are both swept?
Each flue is a separate job. A Valparaiso chimney with two flues, say one for a fireplace and one for a basement stove or furnace, has two liners that foul at different rates. We inspect both and sweep whichever needs it. Sweeping is quoted per flue, as set out on the pricing page.
