Short answer: NWI Chimney Sweep cleans, inspects and repairs chimneys throughout Merrillville, Indiana. Most Merrillville calls involve a brick fireplace chimney lined with clay tile, often sharing its stack with a furnace or water heater flue. We sweep the flue, check tile joints, crown and flashing against NFPA 211, and explain what we found before recommending any repair.

Merrillville runs its own town government, and the Town of Merrillville official website is the right first stop if a chimney rebuild is large enough to raise a permit question.

What kind of chimneys do Merrillville homes have?

Most Merrillville chimneys we open are site-built brick stacks with clay-tile flue liners, the normal construction for houses of the 1960s through 1980s. The Census ACS 2019-2023 median year built for Merrillville housing is 1978, and the town only incorporated in 1971, so much of its housing is of one generation. The fireplace types below are trade experience of each period, not a count of Merrillville houses.

Why does 45-year-old clay tile need a camera and not just a brush?

Clay flue tiles crack from thermal shock and lose mortar at their joints, and neither fault can be seen from the firebox. A tile liner is a stack of sections, each about two feet tall, bedded on mortar. Decades of heating cycles open those joints, one hot chimney fire can split a tile lengthwise, and any gap lets heat and flue gas reach the brick shell and nearby framing. That is why a fireplace flue sweep on a Merrillville chimney of this age pairs naturally with a Level 2 camera inspection: the brush removes the creosote, the camera shows whether the liner behind it is still continuous. Where it is not, the usual fix is a stainless steel liner listed to UL 1777, sized to the fireplace or appliance it serves.

Where in Merrillville do we work?

We sweep across the whole town, from the streets around Hidden Lake Park to the homes behind the Broadway and US 30 corridor. Merrillville traces itself to 1834 and Wiggins Point, a wagon-train stop from which, the town’s own history page says, 16 trails once radiated. Other landmarks customers steer us by: Merrillville High School, the Merrillville/Ross Township Historical Society Museum or the Albanese Candy Factory and outlet store

What does a Merrillville sweep visit include?

A standard visit covers protection of the room, a full-length sweep, an NFPA 211 Level 1 inspection and a plain-language summary of findings.

  1. Protect the hearth room

Drop cloths go down from the door to the firebox and the opening is kept under HEPA vacuum suction.

  2. Sweep the full flue

Rotary rods and a brush matched to the tile size remove soot and creosote from the smoke shelf to the cap.

  3. Inspect what is reachable

Firebox, damper, smoke chamber, crown, cap and flashing are checked; a second flue serving the furnace is looked at too.

  4. Talk through the findings

You hear what is fine, what to watch and what needs repair, such as crown sealing or a new cap.

Starting rates for every service are on the chimney service pricing page. We also sweep next door in Hobart and Crown Point; the complete list is on the Northwest Indiana service area page.

Merrillville chimney questions

How often should a Merrillville fireplace chimney be swept?

NFPA 211 calls for every chimney, fireplace and vent to be inspected at least once a year and cleaned when the deposits warrant it. For a Merrillville wood-burning fireplace, the working rule in the trade is to sweep once soot or creosote reaches about one-eighth of an inch on the flue walls, which for most households burning through the heating season means once a year.

My Merrillville house was built in the late 1970s. Is the original clay liner still safe?

It may be, but age alone cannot tell you. A clay-tile liner in a late-1970s Merrillville home has been through more than forty winters of heating cycles, and the failures that matter, open mortar joints and lengthwise cracks, sit out of sight above the damper. A camera run up the flue is the only reliable way to confirm the liner is still continuous.

Does the furnace flue inside my Merrillville chimney need attention too?

Yes. Many Merrillville masonry chimneys carry two flues, one for the fireplace and one for a gas furnace or water heater. Gas appliances leave little soot, but a flue blocked by tile flakes or nesting material spills carbon monoxide indoors. We look at the second flue during the same visit.

Can a Merrillville chimney be swept in the middle of winter?

Sweeping can be done in any month because the work happens from inside the house with rods and a vacuum. Masonry repair on a Merrillville chimney is different: fresh mortar and crown material should not be placed in freezing conditions without cold-weather protection, so crown rebuilds and tuckpointing are usually scheduled for milder weather.

What is the white powdery staining on my Merrillville chimney brick?

White powder on chimney brick is efflorescence: salts carried to the surface by water moving through the masonry and left behind when it evaporates. On a Merrillville chimney it is a moisture signal, not just a cosmetic mark. The usual sources are a cracked crown, a missing cap or failed flashing, and the stain returns until that water entry is fixed.

My 1990s Merrillville home has a metal chimney inside a boxed chase. Does it need sweeping?

A factory-built fireplace with a metal chimney still collects creosote if it burns wood, so it needs the same yearly inspection and sweeping when deposits build. On newer Merrillville homes we also check the sheet-metal chase cover, because a rusted one lets rain run down inside the chase.

What happens in a Level 2 chimney inspection when buying a house in Merrillville?

NFPA 211 calls for a Level 2 inspection when a property is sold or transferred. For a Merrillville home purchase that means a basic inspection plus a video scan of the full flue and a look at the chimney in any accessible attic, basement or crawl space, so hidden liner damage is found before closing.

Is NWI Chimney Sweep available on weekends for Merrillville appointments?

Yes. NWI Chimney Sweep is open seven days a week from 7am to 9pm, so Merrillville homeowners can arrange a sweep or inspection on a Saturday or Sunday as easily as a weekday. Phone during those hours and a person will answer.
