What the reminders cover
The reminders follow the Northwest Indiana chimney year: damage checks in spring, sweeping in summer, scheduling in fall and safe burning in winter.
- Late winter into spring: a walk-around checklist for damage the cold left behind, such as flaked brick faces, fresh cracks in the crown, and white salt stains that show where water is moving through the stack.
- Summer: why this is the right time to sweep. Creosote left sitting through humid weather is what makes a fireplace smell, and exterior mortar repairs cure best in warm, dry conditions.
- Early fall: a nudge to get on the schedule before the first frost, plus a reminder to light the gas fireplace pilot and run the unit once before you actually need it.
- Heating season: burning tips, such as how to tell seasoned wood from green, and a prompt to check the dryer vent hood outside for lint or ice.
Each note is brief and practical. The longer explanations stay on the website, in the chimney maintenance guide and the rest of the guides library, and new articles appear on the chimney blog.

A reminder is good. A swept chimney is better.
